Sputnik Mania

Sputnik Mania

Sputnik Mania” – October 4, 2007 marked the 50th anniversary of the launch of Sputnik, the first man-made object ever to leave the atmosphere and successfully orbit the earth. Throughout the world, events are being planned to celebrate the “Sputnik Year,” which begins on the anniversary and runs through December 31, 2008. As part of that celebration, SPUTNIK MANIA tells the satellite’s story from America’s point of view.

Like today, 1957 was a time of fear. In place of Al Qaeda, dirty bombs, and the war in Iraq, there were the Soviets, hydrogen bombs, and the Cold War. The world’s two superpowers were hell-bent on beating one another by any means necessary. It was also a time of political wrangling, with a popular president under attack for not being strong enough on Communism.

The film leads us through the first year following the launch of Sputnik. By the end of that year, nothing was the same. Sputnik spurred us into an arms and space race, necessitating the creation of an academic army of scientists and engineers. This led to the development of NASA, massive reforms in our education system, and the discoveries that enabled many of the consumer technologies on which we depend today (The Internet, cell phones, global positioning systems, credit card verifications and high-definition televisions). The launch of Sputnik also led to widespread panic, fear and anxiety as leading politicians and the media whipped the public into an escalating mass frenzy – only months after Sputnik’s launch, 60% of Americans thought that nuclear war was imminent and that 50% of the American population would likely die (Gallup Poll, April 1958).

With our education system again in dire need of reform, the renewed focus on nuclear testing, and NASA’s plans to build a moon base by 2024, the cosmic frontier has reopened to a new generation of scientists, engineers, and soldiers. As the film’s epilogue asks: what will be our next “Sputnik moment” — the event that drives us to address these and other challenges?

SPUTNIK MANIA is based on Paul Dickson’s bestselling book Sputnik: The Shock of the Century. The filmmaker, David Hoffman, has 40 years of movie-making experience, including over one hundred television specials and four feature documentaries. Actor Live Schrieber narrates the film with his dramatic and instantly recognizable style of storytelling.

Virtually every relevant organization supported the production of Sputnik. This includes the Russians, NASA, the Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL), the National Education Association, NPR’s Daniel Schorr, Homer Hickam of Rocket Boys fame, and more. All of these groups and individuals contribute to the film with short clips dramatically telling their stories.

Paralleling the shocks we felt in the aftermaths of Pearl Harbor and September 11, “Sputnik Mania” sings the uncannily prophetic song of the past to the tune of the present. It tells a story of great relevance to the issues of the 21st century.

Commenting on the geo-political atmosphere of the day, SPUTNIK MANIA offers a great opportunity to frame some important conversations pertaining to:
• international relations and American foreign policy;
• the march of science and technology;
• the impact on children/youth and implications for our school curriculum;
• the collective response to 9/11;
• the role of the media and fear; and
• American politics and the importance of remembering our history

Sleepwalking

Sleepwalking

Sleepwalking” – The underrated and overly sexy Nick Stahl (In The Bedroom, Terminator 3), AnnaSophia Robb (“Bridge to Terabithia,” Charlie and the Chocolate Factory) and Academy Award winner Charlize Theron (Monster, North Country) star in “Sleepwalking,” a moving drama about the deep familial bond that develops between a 30-year-old man and his young niece after the girl’s mother suddenly leaves town. Directed by William Maher from a screenplay by Zac Stanford (The Chumscrubber), “Sleepwalking” also stars Academy Award nominees Dennis Hopper (Hoosiers, Blue Velvet) and Woody Harrelson (“No Country For Old Men”). Forced out of her home after her boyfriend is arrested, Joleen Reedy (Charlize Theron) needs a place to stay with her 11-year-old daughter, Tara (AnnaSophia Robb). She turns for help to her younger brother, James (Nick Stahl) — a simple and overly trusting man who doesn’t hesitate to welcome them into his modest rental apartment. Almost as soon as she moves in, however, Joleen hits the road with another man. Utterly ill-equipped to be the sole guardian of an adolescent girl, James does his best to make his distraught niece happy. But before long, things spin out of control: he loses his road crew job and Tara is put into foster care. Additionally, old wounds from his emotionally abusive and sometimes violent father (Dennis Hopper) begin to reopen as James is forced to re-examine his life. That’s when James makes a fateful decision that will bring his life full circle and force him to face his demons. He takes off with Tara and the pair assumes new identities as father and daughter. What starts out as a ploy to evade authorities takes on a deeper significance as James strives to become the dad Tara never had, and for the first time finds a true purpose in life.

Never Back Down

Never Back Down

Never Back Down” - Set against the action-packed world of Mixed Martial Arts, “Never Back Down” is the story of Jake Tyler, a tough kid who leads with his fists, and, often, with his heart. Jake Tyler, played by Sean Faris, is the new kid in town with a troubled past. He has recently moved to Orlando, Florida with his family who has relocated to support his younger brother’s shot at a professional tennis career. Jake was a star athlete on the football team at home, but in this new city he is an outsider with a reputation for being a quick tempered brawler.

Making an attempt to fit in, at the invitation of a flirtatious classmate, Baja (Amber Heard), Jake goes to a party where he is unwittingly pulled into a fight with a bully named Ryan McDonald (Cam Gigandet). While he is defeated and humiliated in the fight, a classmate introduces himself to Jake and tells him about the sport known as Mixed Marshall Arts (MMA). He sees a star in Jake and asks that he meet with his mentor, Jean Roqua, played by Djimon Hounsou (Blood Diamond, In America).

It is immediately apparent to Jake that MMA is not street fighting, but rather an art form he wants to master. Roqua will take Jake under his wing, but it is up to Jake to find the patience, discipline, willingness and reason within him to succeed. For Jake, there is much more at stake than mere victory. His decision will not just settle a score; it will define who he is.

Meatloaf: In Search of Paradise

Meatloaf: In Search Of Paradise” - Actor, performer, and multi-platinum rock icon Meat Loaf reveals surprising shades of himself – and a fertile creative mind in constant flux – in this intimate and highly-entertaining theatrical feature documentary. The time is early 2007, one of the most stressful in Meat Loaf’s career, when he is about to launch his most ambitious tour ever: an 18 month long marathon to support Bat Out of Hell III, the final album of the legendary “Bat” trilogy (first two albums had combined sales of over 55 million- two of the biggest selling albums of all time). His exhausting – and often poignant – journey takes him from Burbank, California through the first leg of his tour through Canada. Along the way, an unexpected media controversy erupts over the staging of one of his songs – a controversy that raises questions about his art, his age, his relevance – and brings into focus the drive (and demons) that have fueled his over-the-top stage persona for almost 40 years.

Horton Hears A Who

Horton Hears A Who

An adaptation of Dr. Seuss’s 1954 children’s book, “Horton Hears a Who” is about an imaginative elephant (Jim Carrey) who hears a cry for help coming from a tiny speck of dust floating through the air. Suspecting there may be life on that speck and despite a surrounding community that thinks he has lost his mind, Horton is determined to help. Steve Carell voices the mayor of Who-ville, a distinguished figure of a very small size, too small to be seen by the elephant’s eyes. “Horton Hears A Who” just may become one of 2008′s highest grossing animated films.
